Tree and Cloud

Jean Royle created this Christmas card design of an oak tree set against the backdrop of a landscape and cloudy sky in the 1980s. The card measures 4½” x 3¼” and several versions of this design were produced. Here it is shown printed in dark brown on cream paper with hand painted details.  The tree stands dramatically in the foreground contrasted against a billowing cloud. The image is alive with movement and the colours are chosen to reflect nature, sap green with burnt umber  and Indian red.  Trees were a favourite subject which she studied in depth  as exemplified in the Tree Drawings section of this site. The preliminary sketches in pencil and conté crayon are taken from Jean Royle’s sketchbook and are shown below.
