Jean Royle created this original Christmas card design in the 1980s. Measuring 5″ x 3¾” it was printed with black ink onto white paper. The ‘Scarecrow’ design shows Jean’s carefully constructed compostition with an apparently simplistic but clever use of black and white pattern qualities, revealing the influence that wood cuts had on her style. The mood of the design has moved from slightly gloomy, in the preliminary pencil sketch of the snowman as shown below, to humorous in the finalised version.
