Red Butterfly

Jean Royle created this card design of a red butterfly hovering above stylised poppies in a harvest field in the late 1980s.  The card measures  5″ x 3½” and was printed in dark green on buff coloured paper with the red and light green painted in by hand in gouache. The landscape in itself forms one lino block, and the butterfly is a separate block used to also print a single butterfly on the inside of the card, and later an independent card design of a group of butterflies. Preliminary sketches  in pencil for this design are taken from Jean Royle’s sketchbook and shown below.
